SCAP!!!
Uhh...SCAP stands for Stupid american College Admission Prodedures...cool huh?? LOL
Yesterday my father enlightened me on the way a student gets admitted into an American college or university. I had a vague idea of this because I lived here for a couple of years preparing quite well for the SAT during my stay. Unfortunately, my B grade in PE (running a mile in 10 min. was the cut-off :(( ), as pointed out by my parents, was one of the reasons for me coming back to India after spending 2 cool years in US. A sudden cultural change in me also was a, maybe the, reason for this. IT happens, we can't control it. We can't avoid being influenced by the people here. Not just here, as a matter of fact, anywhere in the world. And we have to get used to the people here and their living styles, those changes might sound exciting to the kids but not to parents ;) . This happened in my case as well.
Anyway...what I heard from my father was quite shocking to hear. Students appear for the SAT in their 11th grade :P and their applications are sent to colleges in Decemeber / January...depends on the colleges. SO, whatever they learn in their 12th grade doesn't count at all!!! What is this?? The core subjects that students learn in their final year don't even count for their college entrance??
Its raining now!!! WOW...it feels so good to see these beautiful droplets of water splashing on the window and sometimes on my screen as well :)
Coming back to the admissions...there is discrimination among people when it comes to fees. The people are divided into two groups, Locals Non-Locals. Locals are the people who belong to the same state. The Non-Local fees are almost double the Local fees!!! Sounds sooo crappy X-( !!! . And the weightage of the SAT score and GPA (from high school) don't have a fixed weightage to decide upon on the admission...they vary from college to college...so a student can't be sure of getting a seat in any college until the final results are declared!!
Father asked me to write the SAT as well...as I had a good chance of getting into a nice college here. However I said, "Vaddu nana...nenu IIIT lo chaala happyga vunnanu...please let me stay there...:)".
Indian system is the best, no doubt about that!!!
Have to go now...and close all the windows....

yipee!! after nearly an eternity, im back to my commentin spree!!!

stupid "american" procedures? no offence, but the admission procedure maybe bad in the US, but the whole educational system is bad in AP. and abt your "indian system" being best, well, things arent too rosy here. i have no idea abt places elsewhere, but here in maharashtra, we had a CET last year. i had to waste some 17 hrs (over 2 days) standing in a queue just to get my "documents" verified. i still have the "stamp" of verification for proof. all students all over maharashtra had to go to FOURTEEN places all over the state, over 3 days for "verification" of certificates, blah blah.
*continues mocking*
atleast the ppl there have an actual "common" test. some of my friends actually wrote some TWELVE entrance tests (aieee, jee, mhcet, tnpcee, vit-whatever, some-jalandher-something,etc). possibly you ppl there would have written just eamcet, aieee and jee, but half my 12th class wrote 6+ exams. someone told me this was the case in the northern states too.
*still mocking (tiring aint it?)*
your local and non-local is better than management seats over here. "management quota" is 15-30% and the min donation is 5 lakhs for engg, 25 for med. oh and the rest 70-85% are divided into local-state and out-of-state ppl.
*finally agrees*
IIIT rocks, for one thing!! for another, "indian system" is not really good, only aieee+jee will be. (+ maybe the bits test. whatever...)
*signs off (to everyones relief!)*

Yipee!! After nearly an eternity, I'm back to my CS and blogging and the first thing that I notice here is Mr.Bidri's comment!!! I am honoured...
*mocks*
Mr.Bidri, I am sorry about the problems that you and your school mates faced during the admissions, I was a victim too. However, you have no idea of the pressure put on the students here. SAT is just the beginning. Remember the local non-local stuff I was talking about? Here comes the real pain in the butt. These college people will make you run behind them for various document verification and stupid reasons.

2 weeks ago, my father and I went to the Department Motor Vehicles (DMV) to get an ID card for myself as my father didn't want me to carry my passport around (too precious to lose right?). A person here is given a driver's license only if he is a resident or has a valid H1 visa and EAD, etc. which my father had. The lady didn't hear my father out and asked him to get his passport as well to check his particulars. He wouldn't have been issued a driver's license in the first place if he didn't have a valid visa. We were so pissed at her because it was a 2hr drive to and fro! I hope you get the idea what I'm talking about. US being such a well organised and systematic country as it calls itself, shouldn't create such problems. Alas, it does and we can't help but blog it down :P.
*already agreed*
IIIT rocks and the Indian system will be a lot better if it only had AIEEE + IIT-JEE and maybe BITSAT.
*signs off*

Mr. Bidri, does the word "mock" mean anything to you? It was used by you in the first place...so I thought you very well knew what it meant...it doesn't look like that now!
I've better things to do than copying your virtual crap...
